Getting Prepared!

Please go to the City of Tukwila's website for up-to-date information on the Green River flooding and Howard Hanson Dam - http://www.ci.tukwila.wa.us/hhdam.html

Cities, school districts, families and business are preparing for possible flooding this fall and winter of the Green River and Duwamish River.  The Army Corp of Engineers said that damage last winter to the Howard Hansen Dam, located above Kent, Renton and Auburn, means that more water than usual might have to be released.  Recently, the Corps adjusted their recent flood projections and they are working on the dam to complete some interim repairs including raising the height of the levees in the valley.  It is important to note that the Corps of Engineers assures us that there is no risk of the dam failing.

School District's Plan:

None of the schools in the Tukwila School District will be directly affected.  All of the schools are well above flood stage.  However, many of our families in the Interurban, Allentown and Foster Point areas may be affected by a potential flood.  Each family should have a plan covering what to do when children arrive at home due to an emergency situation:

  • What is the best route home if your student cannot be delivered to their normal bus stop?
  • Where would they go of you are not at home?

We are also encouraging families in this area to purchase flood insurance and put a plan in place as well as a "Go Kit".

If we should have flooding during the school day, the District has a plan in place to allow students in the affected flood areas to go to Foster High School.  Parents, guardians and/or family members can meet their students at Foster.  The District will communicate with parents through this website as well as through our Schoolmessenger calling system.

Please be sure that your child's emergency information is up-to-date, including a working phone number where you can be reached.
