Teen CERT at Foster High School
Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT is a nationwide
volunteer program. CERT trained
volunteers can help out in their community in a variety of ways and are an
essential part of the City’s disaster planning.
Foster High School and the City
of Tukwila are very excited to offer Teen CERT to our high school
students. This exciting program is free
to all our high school students. The
deadline for signing up is Thursday morning, February 19. Classes will be on Mondays and Tuesdays from
4-6pm starting February 23 and ending March 24.
The final drill will be in the morning on March 28 where students will
practice all the skills they learned. If
we don’t reach the minimum number of students required to offer this class, we
will have to cancel. Students will earn
24 hours of community service, receive a backpack with some important CERT
gear, and - this training looks GREAT on your resume.
Students will learn about hazards to our area, and how to
prepare for a disaster. They will also
learn how to safely use a fire extinguisher, how to rescue and assist injured
people and sort them by their injuries, how to work within a team and important
communication skills. The skills learned
during this class are life-long skills and can be applied to many situations
outside of CERT. Teen CERT volunteers
can continue their volunteer service in any City nationwide with a CERT program,
and are eligible to take part in many continuing education opportunities. This is the same CERT program offered by the
City of Tukwila to adults. This is an
excellent opportunity for everyone, and students considering careers in the
medical field or public safety (police/fire) would find this class extremely
Applications are available in the main office and by
clicking here . Students can drop their
completed applications off at the main office with Mrs. Aguiluz and she will
deliver them to the City.
