Message from the School Board
July 11, 2012
Contact: Mark Wahlstrom, President
Last night the board of directors accepted the resignation of Ethelda Burke as Superintendent of the Tukwila School District. A letter sent to the board explained her reasons for her action. I want to thank Mrs. Burke for her service to the district and to the children of Tukwila. She has in her time here worked extremely hard and diligently for them.
In a second action the board appointed Dr. Mellody Matthes to the role of Interim Superintendent for the Tukwila School District. In the last three months Dr. Matthes has performed the duties of the Superintedents office admirably in a tough situation. We have a lot of work to do preparing for the coming year and Dr. Matthes with her knowledge and experience with the district is well suited to move us forward without worrying about additional transitions.
The district still has an ongoing investigation being conducted by the EEOC and we are cooperating with that investigation and await its results. While I have the utmost respect for the EEOC, its process can be very long and I am again asking for patience as they do their work. That patience will help make sure that this process remains fair.
